Office of the Director-General

Acheivements of the office of the Director General include the following:

Housing Loans Committee

•  Price Intelligence and Monitoring Committee

•  Quality Control Committee

•  President's NYSC National Honours Award Selection Committee (The President NYSC Honours Award to cover corps members who served from 1998-2004 has been approved to hold in December 2005 by Mr. President)

•  NYSC Publications Committee

•  ICPC Monitoring Unit

•  Staff Merit Award Committee

•  Best Secretariat and Best Staff Honours Award Committee

•  Senior/Junior Staff Committee

•  Implementation Committee on the White Paper report.

•  Technical Committee on the Restructuring of the NYSC

    •  Familiarization Visit to States. Familiarization tours of States and Local governments to appreciate the problems of the scheme at the grass root levels.

•  Management Meetings. Resuscitation of Management meetings, which were long abandoned, was to ensure that decisions are taken collectively.

•  Revival of mutual working relationship with the Press to ensure that issues of importance to the public are promptly disseminated.

•  Enhance collaboration with Local and International Agencies as a way of exposing the potentials of the scheme to national and international development agencies and create outlets for the utilization of the services of corps members.

•  Introduced the John Foppe Motivational Lecture Series to create a conducive atmosphere for private sector participation and encouragement of self-help and employment.

•  Initiating an interactive forum with Stakeholders to engender deeper commitment and patronage of the Scheme and broadening the capacity base of the scheme.

•  Securing the lifting of embargo on promotions and appointments. To this end, results of the outstanding promotion interview held in 2002 were promptly released while promotion interview was conducted for other sets of staff who fell due during the period of embargo.

Autonomous Units in the Office of the Director-General: These are Public Relations Unit, Internal Audit Unit and Legal Unit.

Public Relations Unit: The Public Relations unit is headed by a Director (SGL 17) and the unit broadly takes responsibility for Protocol, communication, publications, and information as well as photography/video matters.

•  Image making of the scheme.

•  Establishment and maintenance of good rapport with various media, principally to facilitate dissemination of information on the scheme.

•  Maintenance of free flow of communication within the organization as well as the general public.

•  Handles passages, in-house publications, press releases, general press liaison and printing.

•  Collation and publication of the Director-General's selected Speeches from October 2004 to October 2005 as a reference material for the scheme.

Internal Audit Unit: The Internal Audit unit is headed by a Director (SGL 17) and the unit is established to serve as internal control and checks for the scheme. Other duties of the unit include:

•  Scrutinising of vouchers and all financial transactions to ensure that they tall with federal government financial statue/regulations.

•  Detection of errors and mistakes in recording of financial transactions.

•  Carrying out investigations when the need arises.

•  Monitoring the writing of the financial statement/performance of the organization at the end of each fiscal year.

•  Evaluating the assess and liabilities of the organization within specified periods.

•  Ensuring that internal control mechanism put in place by the management is not abused.

•  Ensuring the pre-auditing of all vouchers before payment.

Legal Unit: The Legal Unit is heady by a Chief Legal Officer (SGL 14). The unit performs the following functions:

•  Legal advise to management

•  Representing the scheme in litigations, i.e. defends and/or prosecutes cases that are in court on behalf of the court on behalf of the NYSC

•  Formalizing all forms of contracts involving the NYSC. This also includes drafting Memoranda of Understanding between the scheme and its patrons/collaborators.

•  Overseeing the activities of Corps Legal Aid Scheme (CLAS) in the state Secretariats.

•  The Head of Unit represents the NYSC on the Board of the Legal Aid Council.
